Our Key Values of Christmas

I really dislike when I see Christmas written as Xmas - as it takes away the real meaning of the Season - Christ.

Since declaring myself as a Christian, it has become really important to ensure that myself and my family acknowledge and celebrate Jesus as part of our Traditions.

In reflection on this year’s Christmas there are 4 key parts that I view as important, which I realise are our key Values of this Season -  God, Gratitude, Generosity and Gathering.

GOD - What a fabulous time to really celebrate our faith, praise our Lord God Heavenly Father, Jesus and Holy Spirit.  From 1 December when we put up our Christmas Tree, we also display our Nativity Scene in a prominent place in our home.  We also enjoy the Jesse Tree every night in the lead up to Christmas.  My little girl may not yet understand all of the stories or even want to sit through the story each night - yet at this stage I focus on the pictures, a key point of each story and we pray together.  This year it was more rushed than normal, and some nights we didn’t get to do it, and would catch up the next night - yet God does not call us to be perfect - God calls us to come as we are and to try - it is enough for me that my little girl is excited about the Jesse Tree and putting on the ornaments.

We also really enjoy going to Church on Christmas Eve (actually we really enjoy going to Church all of the time).  We are blessed that we are part of the Kingsway Community.  Christmas Eve is very special to me as this is when I was baptised last year - and so it has an extra special meaning for me.  We love singing Carols and worshiping with our Community and I love being inspired by the message of the Pastor.  This year I loved the message that Christmas has a sense of mystery and a sense of expectation that something wonderful is going to happen, and that the true gift of Christmas is a life of abundance through Jesus Christ.  I also love his encouragement to let every heart prepare him room -   to make room for the mystery.  How true is this - that in the busyness of Christmas - in the busyness of life - we need to make room for Jesus.

One of the highlights this Christmas has been enjoying seeing Christmas Lights with our girl.  We loved that one night we were driving home and decided to visit a local area.  There weren’t a lot of people there, so we parked the car and walked around together as a family.  I loved the sense of community in this street, where each home has a red candy cane out the front, showing a united front.  I particularly loved that when we got to the home in the middle of the culdesac there was a beautiful image of Jesus, Mary and Joseph.  It was also great talking to the owners of the home who specifically chose the image and placed it in the centre of their other decorations to reflect the real meaning of Christmas.  On Christmas Eve we also walked around looking at lights with our nieces - it was really special - a real sense of community spirit and excitement - and I loved seeing images of Jesus.  Inparticular I loved one nativity scene that was displayed out of the front of a home, showcasing the birth of Jesus.

On Christmas Day we definitely remind our little girl about Jesus being the gift of Christmas and that it is Jesus’ Birthday - even though it I am the Spiritual Leader in our family, it was my Husband who started singing “Happy Birthday” to Jesus with our girl - this was special.

GRATITUDE - Gratitude is one of our Family Values and I am grateful that I am naturally a grateful person.
a

Christmas time is definitely for me a time to be grateful - grateful to our Heavenly Father for the gift of Jesus who was born on Christmas Day.  We are also grateful to God for our blessings at this time of year - especially in view of the local disaster at Kurnell, fires in Melbourne and global events for which we pray.  I am also so grateful to my loved ones - my Husband for always being so thoughtful, my little girl who fills our heart and home with joy, and also for my Mum and Dad and Mother-In-Law for all they do to help me with our little girl.  I am also very grateful to our Church Community and to our Lifegroup - grateful to be able to share our faith and celebrate together.

GENEROSITY - Being generous at Christmas is really important to us.  We feel called to be generous as part of our faith.  Usually we like to put a whole hamper together and gift to one family - yet this year it has been such a blessing where we have been able to contribute as part of a community - where we have been able to donate to three different hampers and also give some money to help another woman in our community.  It felt good to be able to give and we want to model this to our children.

It can be a difficult time trying to balance the budget, with so many outgoings and often I wish we could give more.  Yet I am reminded of the story in the Bible, about the widow’s offering, Mark 12:41-44 - “ Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury.  Many rich people threw in large amounts.  But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.  Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, ‘Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others.  They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything - all she had to live on.’ ”

I remember a time, that seemed a long time ago, when I had a big fancy job and earned a lot of money - I seemed to have a lot more money where I could be very generous.  Yet as Jesus illustrates to us, it is not about comparison - it is about being generous with what we can give, and there is definitely a place for giving to those less fortunate than ourselves.

We also love giving gifts to each other - gifts to our girl, plus my Husband and I exchange gifts and we love to buy for our family.

Although we are a Christian Family we are happy for our little girl to have photos with Santa and get presents from Santa (as well as from Mummy and Daddy).  We loved that at the Children’s Christmas Service at our Church one of the symbols that was mentioned was Santa, where Santa was referred to as  a symbol of generosity.  This almost gave me permission for our girl to wear a reindeer t-shirt on Christmas Eve with Merry Christmas written on it - even though I did buy a tshirt with a nativity scene on it, that ended up being too big for her.

I also enjoyed reading about the man behind the story of Father Christmas or Santa Claus.  "St. Nicholas was a Bishop who lived in the fourth century in a place called Myra in Asia Minor (now called Turkey).  He was a very rich man because his parents died when he was young and left him a lot of money.  He was also a very kind man and had a reputation for helping the poor and giving secret gifts to people who needed it. There are several legends about St. Nicholas.  The most famous story about St. Nicholas tells how the custom of hanging up stockings to get presents in first started! It goes like this:  There was a poor man who had three daughters.  He was so poor, he did not have enough money for a dowry, so his daughters couldn't get married.  One night, Nicholas secretly dropped a bag of gold down the chimney and into the house (This meant that the oldest daughter was then able to be married).  The bag fell into a stocking that had been hung by the fire to dry!  This was repeated later with the second daughter.  Finally, determined to discover the person who had given him the money, the father secretly hid by the fire every evening until he caught Nicholas dropping in a bag of gold.  Nicholas begged the man to not tell anyone what he had done, because he did not want to bring attention to himself.  But soon the news got out and when anyone received a secret gift, it was thought that maybe it was from Nicholas.  Because of his kindness Nicholas was made a Saint."

GATHERING - Gathering together at Christmas with our extended family is a definite highlight.  We love Christmas morning where we firstly gather as a family to exchange gifts.  We love the excitement and joy this time brings, and it is really special having this time together.  We then have time with both sides of our family - gathering at lunchtime on Christmas Day with one side of the family and gathering on Boxing Day with the other side of the family.  It is a great time, where we enjoy giving to each other, sharing great food, conversation and laughter.  We are blessed.

While Christmas may be over, it is important for us to remember that the gift of Jesus Christ is with us every day - that we make a daily choice to allow Jesus into our hearts and that through Jesus we can experience true joy and true peace.

Wearing My Cross

My Husband bought me a gold cross early in our marriage - it is really special to me - I love my cross and I love wearing my cross.

It is a daily reminder to me of Jesus and his sacrifice for us.

Every day when I put on my cross, at this time I am making a deliberate, conscious, intentional decision - I am reinforcing my decision to be a Christian, to be active in my faith, to follow Jesus - and as I put on my cross I am aware of this daily choice.  As this time I am also saying a quiet prayer to God - thanking him for choosing me and asking that the Holy Spirit will guide me through the day - and I feel Jesus present with me, I visually feel his presence.

I like to put on my cross as a reminder to myself of who I am and who I am choosing to be.

I also wear my cross with pride as I am open about my faith - I am proud to be a Christian, and I want to attribute glory to God.  My cross is just a small cross, some people may not notice my cross, yet I am happy for people to know and see that I wear a cross.  I want to be accountable, I want people to know that I am Christian - I want people to expect big things from me in terms of how I love them,  how I serve them and how present I am with them - I want them to know that I am here, working for God.  I find that it can sometimes be in the small things, the small decisions - such as at work when another may be saying something negative about someone, I can choose how to respond, I can choose to not get involved in talking about someone else.  I am inspired by the example set my Jesus - how he loves others.

I am not perfect, I am still learning and growing.  Yet I am committed to listening to Jesus, to being guided by the Holy Spirit, to being all that God has called and created me to be (as encouraged by the leaders at my Church - Kingsway Community Church).

I have always believed in God - yet now that I call myself a Christian, I am choosing to be conscious of my daily choices, my daily decisions, my daily walk with God.

Being Christian for me is recognising that Jesus saved me.  I am redeemed through Christ.  God knows me, God knows the mistakes of my past, my poor decisions, where I have let myself down - yet Jesus called me to follow him, he got hold of my heart and he set me on a new path - as per the Pastor’s description of many people in the Bible that became followers of Christ, where Jesus restored them from their brokenness.   Jesus forgives me and allows me to forgive myself.  I am able to draw a line in the sand and move forward with passion and purpose.

In choosing to be a Christian woman, I am best able to be a Christian Mum - as I am able to role model to my children what it means to be a Christian and encourage them to see Jesus as their friend and to understand that they are beautiful and unique children of God.  As a Christian Mum, I am committed to bringing my children up in the Church, and to exposing them to, and creating environments, where they can encounter God.

I love books, yet it is interesting that since becoming a Mum, I have read less books, as well as having less time, the main reason is that I am now relying more on God - letting him guide me through my intuition, praying when I am making decisions, really trusting and relying on God - rather than looking to others for answers or searching for answers in books.  Of course there are many great books and great authors which can teach so much through shared stories and experiences.  Of course my favourite book is my Bible - a present from my Husband on the day of our Wedding - I definitely love reading the Bible and listening to what God wants me to know from reading and reflecting on his Word.

As posted by my friend and Pastor Kym the other week, I have also been reflecting over this year, that despite there being so many parenting philosophies, we have God - hence why I choose to be A Christian Mum - as this is the best gift I can give to my family, and the easiest and most peaceful way for myself and in my role as a Mum.

When my daughter was baptised we bought her a cross and we also bought crosses for our three nieces when they were flower girls at our Wedding.  My prayer is that my children and nieces will value their crosses and what they mean and that they will also choose to make a daily decision to follow Jesus.

I love the words in this passage - "Thomas said to Him, 'Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?'  Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life' " (John 14:5-6).  I love being inspired and excited and that's how I feel when I read God's Word.  And may my journey encourage others to walk daily with our Lord God.

My Commitment

On 10 March 2013 we had our little girl Baptised at Our Lady Of Fatima, Caringbah.  My Husband and I were brought up in the Catholic Church and our Daughter's Baptism was a very special family day.  One of the beautiful aspects of having our Daughter's Baptism was that it was an opportunity for us to make a commitment to bring up our little girl to know and love God.  We as parents have made a choice and a commitment to guide our Daughter to live a life of faith.

One year later (on the same weekend) on 9 March 2014 we had a Dedication for our little girl at our Church.  This was very special as it was a chance to reinforce our commitment.  We were grateful that our friend and Pastor, Kym was able to lead the Dedication.  I was also happy to be able to pray for our little girl and our dear friend Pam also prayed for our Daughter and our family.

Some of my favourite verses that we reflected on in preparation for our Daughter's Dedication included -
* Deuteronomy 6: 4-7 “The LORD is our God, the Lord alone.  And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.  And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today.  Repeat them again and again to your children.  Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.”
* Jeremiah 1:5 “Before I made you in your mother’s womb, I chose you.  Before you were born, I set you apart for a special work” says the Lord
* 2 Corinthians 3:18  “Our lives gradually become brighter and more beautiful as God enters our lives and we become like him.”(I love love love this verse)
* Mark 10:14-16 “Let the children come to me” “Then he took the children in his arms and placed his hands on their heads and blessed them.”
* Numbers “May the Lord bless you and protect you.  May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you.  May the LORD show you his favour and give you his peace.”

Then this year on 8 March 2015 we had a small afternoon tea with Kym and Pam from Church.  It was really special as I wanted to honour our little girl as a Child of God, celebrate her and confirm our commitment.

We will continue to acknowledge our commitment and celebrate our little girl on the same weekend every year - it will be an important date in our calendar.

Apart from the commitment we have made to bring up our little girl in the Church, to learn about God and to encourage her to follow Jesus, I also made a commitment on Christmas Eve last year to be Baptised at our Church.  While I was Baptised as a baby and first felt a sense of coming home to my faith in December 2010, it was such a special moment at my Baptism last year, to officially celebrate my decision to be a Christian.  It was really special as I was Baptised by Kym and it was definitely memorable with my Husband and Daughter sharing this moment with me.

Reading Matthew 4 this week was great when I was reading about the Baptism of Jesus "After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him.  And a voice from heaven said, 'This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.' " (Matthew 4: 16-17.  I find it interesting that the Baptism of Jesus is the first story we read about Jesus as an adult, where he intentionally set out from Galilee to the Jordan River to be Baptised - he made this commitment - "Jesus said 'It should be done, for we must carry out all that God requires.' " (Matthew 4:15)

Reading this and reflecting on this story of Jesus makes me happy that I have chosen as an adult to be Baptised, that I have made this commitment.

And so how does this commitment look like practically, day to day?  Well this is my journey of discovery - I have made the commitment to be a Christian myself and a Christian Mum, where I have made a commitment to study and learn and be active in my faith.  I am realising that through the great times and the challenges, God is with me.  There are the highlight moments - driving to Church and singing and dancing in the car, to 'My God Is So Big' with my girl and spending time at Church together.  And there are the tough moments - when I am tired after work and it is late and my little girl doesn't want to go to bed, and I am cranky - these are the times I forgive myself and pray for reassurance.

Since making my commitment to follow Jesus I feel blessed by his presence which has been life changing for me and also for my family - Praise God!

Praise God for making me a Mum (and thank you to my Hubby)

After I was married, I was praying and praying that God would bless us with a precious baby. We also had friends from our Church and my Aunty Joyce praying for us. I had complete faith that I would be a Mum.

When we found out that I was pregnant, my Hubby and I were so overjoyed - this was our dream come true.  I prayed every day through my pregnancy - praying specifically for the development and growth of our little baby.  I love the verse "You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother's womb.  Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex." (Psalm 139: 13-14).  The image that I held close to my heart was the image of Jesus holding our baby - I knew this to be the truth - that our baby was safe in the loving arms of our God.

When I first held our little girl in my arms, I felt so incredibly happy and felt so blessed - our baby - a miracle - God's gift to us.  The first night I could not sleep (I actually did not sleep since I was so excited), I kept watching our little girl - she was so so beautiful - she was ours - thank you God.

As I write these words "thank you God" - these words, any words, do not seem enough.  And so the best way I can show my gratitude to God is to follow Jesus, to study the life and examples of Jesus, to be brave and confident in declaring that I Am A Christian Woman and that I Choose To Be A Christian Mum.  I am claiming and naming myself - I Am A Christian Mum - I am making this commitment in reverence to God.  This is my chosen journey.

I have always been a person that loves to read books and I have a lot of books - most of my books since my twenties have been on self-development.  Yet since becoming a Mum I have read less books - firstly because I have had less time, also because of Google, yet mainly because I have learnt to trust myself and my intuition, which is governed and guided from the Holy Spirit.  What a gift to A Christian Mum - the Holy Spirit - 24/7 available to guide me.  And I have also discovered the power of prayer and the joy of having a personal relationship with God - what a gift to be able to feel the presence of Jesus with me in every moment.

Before I became a Mum I did buy a few books from a local bookshop, where I was recommended 'The Complete Buddhism For Mothers'.  When I see this book on my bookshelf, it seems strange that I did buy this book.  Soon after, in my conversations with God, I felt inspired to write about being A Christian Mum.  Of course I challenged this calling - who am I to write about being A Christian Mum, especially since I am still learning about what it means to be A Christian.  Why Me? In my Church community and Life Group, there are so many other incredible women - they seem to know all of the Bible stories, and know passages off by heart and know how to pronounce all of the unusual names - and they have been living a Christian life for so much of their life - perhaps they know more - they should be writing this Blog. Yet God reminds us and prompts us and encourages us - and so here I am.  Here I am to share my unique journey - my quest to learn and grow in my faith - my commitment of I Am A Christian Mum.

I am now discovering and enjoying and loving the greatest book of all - the Bible!  I am making the commitment to read and study God's Word daily as part of my journey to live and be A Christian Mum. It will not just be about reading the Bible - but about being inspired through God's Word - what is God specifically saying to me - what is relevant for my life and my role as a Mum.  Today I was at a Christian bookshop and I was buying books for my little girl and my nieces and was looking around to see if I should buy any books for myself - and I felt the whisper of God "read the Bible, read the Bible, read the Bible - spend time in God's Word".  I heard it - loud and clear!

The journey of every Mum, the journey of every woman is unique.  This is not about me feeling like I have all of the answers or telling others how to be a Mum - this is about my journey - this is about me choosing to be A Christian Mum and this Blog is about me being active in learning, reflecting and sharing.  I am handing over my complete trust to God - I choose to follow him.  My greatest prayer is that I can model being A Christian to my children, that I can love like Jesus, and that they too will enjoy a close relationship with Jesus - I pray this in Jesus' name, Amen.
